I hope you are well and having a great start of the week.
Recently, in our family devotion, we read about Joseph’s instructions to the children of Israel before he died. He gave them a prophecy that God would take them out of Egypt into their own land, and he specifically told them to take his bones along with them when they were leaving.
Centuries later, Joseph’s prophecy came to pass, and Moses carried his bones out of Egypt; Exodus 13:19 (NKJV),
And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had placed the children of Israel under solemn oath, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you.”
Now, this is where it got interesting for me. How did Moses know to take away Joseph’s bones? Especially because it wasn’t a direct instruction from Joseph to Moses.
It means the generations in between were intentional about passing on the message. They ensured it didn’t get lost in transition, such that when it was time for the Israelites to leave Egypt, Moses knew what to do.
They didn’t have modern technology to support the process, but they had something that worked for them. I did some research and noticed they used a lot of oral storytelling and even had some form of “peer review” from community members who were present whenever such stories were shared. These were some of the ways they ensured the message was accurately passed on.
In an age where we have technology to our advantage, how much of God’s word are we passing on to our generation and future generations?
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NKJV) states, “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
As children of God, we have a responsibility to pass the good news of the Gospel to others. This includes our family members, neighbors, colleagues, classmates, community members, and so on.
If we all took on this assignment seriously, we’ll be participating in God’s desire to have the gospel preached in all nations; Matt 24:14.
Have you made Jesus the Lord of your life? That’s where it all begins. You have to embrace the love of Jesus yourself before you can successfully pass it on to others. Please say this prayer:
Dear Jesus, I accept you today as my Lord and personal Saviour. I confess that I have sinned; please forgive me. I believe that you died and rose again for me. By your blood, cleanse me from every unrighteousness. Thank you for the new life you have given me; help me to serve you all the days of my life. Ultimately, please help me make it to eternity with you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
