Welcome to your month of favour, completion, and ease, in Jesus name, Amen.

Last week I was reading through John 6, one of the accounts of Jesus feeding the five thousand and something jumped out at me in verse 26:

“Jesus answered them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, you have been searching for Me, not because you saw the miracles and signs but because you were fed with the loaves and were filled and satisfied.” – AMPC

For context, Jesus said this after feeding the five thousand and walking on water. The crowd that he fed had woken up to realise that Jesus and His disciples had gone to the other side of the river. In verse 24, the bible says the crowd got on the boat in search of Jesus, it was that serious. However, what jumped out at me was the point Jesus made in v.26. He said they had come searching for him not because they saw Jesus walk on water or were privy to the fact that He fed them with only five loaves and two fishes, but because they were fed and satisfied.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines satisfied as being pleased because you have got what you wanted, or because something has happened in the way that you wanted. In relation to repayment, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines satisfied to mean ‘paid in full.’ So, the crowd had their needs met and they went searching for Jesus to have the same needs or others met or paid in full.

How do you think people respond to someone or something they find fulfilling or satisfying? If it is an activity, they do more of that activity, if it is a person, they spend more time with them and if it is a consumable, they take more of that thing.

The crowd had their fill of the loaves and it left them wanting another encounter with Jesus. Even though this is not a bad thing, however, when you only seek God for material things, it doesn’t build your faith and relationship with God. How many times have we neglected God when things are going smoothly when we have no needs met but only tirelessly seek Him just so He can satisfy us with that job, or that house, or that husband? The thing about God is that when you have an encounter, it leaves you wanting more of God’s power. However, God’s power is not only for you to satisfy your vain desires. This is why if you read on, Jesus warns us to seek after the food that doesn’t perish but is eternal. We ought to seek God to satisfy our body, soul, and spirit through daily devotion and communion with God. Feeding our spirit and mind and not just our bellies, purses, egos, and ultimately vanity.

Prayer: John 6:28-29 NIV “Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

I pray that God will strengthen our belief in Him and desire for His work and Kingdom. May we be satisfied in God and not toil and seek Him for things that don’t last.
