Happy new week. It’s another blessed and beautiful week, thanks to God. I hope you are having a wonderful one so far.

So, today’s topic is quite wordy, I tried different ways, trust me. But, I think this one did it justice. So, what is today’s #MeditationMonday about you may wonder. The anchor scripture is taken from the second half of 1 Samuel 19:5 (NIV), “The Lord won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?” 

This is one of my favorite chapters and stories of the Bible. It is the story of Saul and David. But in this particular verse, Saul’s son, Jonathan, is speaking to him after word got out that Saul may be looking to kill David. This verse captures the revelation Jonathan highlighted. Saul’s reaction to David’s victories and achievements was that of envy, strife, bitterness but Jonathan on the other hand saw them for what they truly were, God working through an innocent man.

While Saul was busy comparing himself to David and getting angry by the outstanding results David was accumulating, Jonathan was glorifying God for working mightily through him. This says a lot about who Saul was and how he saw himself and his achievements. If he ever thought that everything he was able to accomplish, he did through God, he would not see David as a threat. The moment he started to see David as a threat validated the fact that he was looking at the vessel, David, and not the source, God Almighty. However if we could be like Jonathan in this verse, who saw the source of those achievements rather than the vessel, we won’t put ourselves under any unnecessary pressure.

The truth is that nobody does anything in their capacity and power, God enables us all. The moment we have this understanding, we have peace about our achievements and other people’s successes; then we can look to the source to work through us as well. Believers and unbelievers alike, it is God who permits and enables us to achieve these things (Deuteronomy 8:18; Ecclesiastes 5:19).

If you keep looking at the vessel, you are indirectly competing with God. You can’t compete with God! You either submit to Him and trust that the same God who did the good works in someone else’s life would do the same in yours or you keep fighting a lost battle, holding grudges and stealing your own joy.

Except you think you have been doing everything in your power, then you can go ahead and compare yourself to others.
