We all have opinions about who people say Jesus is. A prophet, a teacher, a miracle worker… but in Matthew 16:13–20, Jesus flips the script and asks His disciples a personal question: “Who do you say I am?” That question got me thinking, and I’d love to unpack it with you.

In verse 13, Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” They threw out different answers: some said Elijah, some said John the Baptist, others said Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

But then Jesus turned the question around: “Okay, but who do you say I am?”

I can imagine the silence in that moment. It wasn’t just about public opinion anymore — it was about personal revelation. Jesus wasn’t looking for what they’d heard; He wanted to know what they had personally discovered about Him after walking with Him, watching Him, and listening to Him.

Thank God for Peter. He caught it. He said in verse 16:

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

And Jesus’ response in verse 17 was powerful: “Flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”

That got me thinking. What revelation of Christ do I have? Do I just see Him through what the world projects — what people say about Him — or do I have a personal revelation of Christ that flows from intimacy, time spent, and my own relationship with Him?

The conversation didn’t stop there. Jesus went further and revealed something about Peter’s identity:

“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” (verse 18)

Here’s the beauty of it: in the place of revelation — when we see Christ clearly — who we truly are also gets revealed.

So today, let me leave you with this thought: What revelation of Christ are you living by? Because the deeper you know Him, the clearer you’ll see yourself.

However, this journey of knowing Jesus begins with having Him as your Lord. If you haven’t accepted Jesus into your heart, please say this prayer:

Dear Jesus, I accept you today as my Lord and personal Saviour. I confess that I have sinned; please forgive me. I believe that you died and rose again for me. By your blood, cleanse me from every unrighteousness. Thank you for the new life you have given me, help me to serve you all the days of my life. Ultimately, please help me make it to eternity with you, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Congratulations, heaven rejoices over you! If you said this prayer and would like additional information/guidance, please send an email to 1nebodyblog@gmail.com

I pray you experience Jesus in newer and deeper ways, in Jesus name.

God bless you,
