But the voice of truth tells me a different story,

The voice of truth says, “Do not be afraid!”

The voice of truth says, “This is for my glory”

Out of all the voices calling out to me

I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth”

This is the chorus to the song, ‘Voice of Truth’ by a Christian band called Casting Crowns. It is off  their debut album also titled Casting Crowns, which was released in 2003. This song is one of my all-time favourites and I heard it for the first time in 2010. It’s my pleasure to share with you what it means to me.

It is a relaxing song that starts slow and soft but gradually builds up to mid tempo. It lifts your spirit, lifts your soul and sets you in the right mood; ‘a feel-good’ song is what it is. But listening to it closely, in the mood of worship, you realize the power in the lyrics with biblical references to Peter walking on water to meet Jesus (Matthew 14:22-34) and David defeating Goliath (I Samuel 17).

Then, the meaning of the song starts to really come to light and by the time you are singing along for the second or third time, you are proclaiming these truths with authority. These bible stories have been broken down nicely in a more relatable way, with connections to negative words, ridicule, bullying, modern day persecution which we are faced with as Christians and individuals in today’s society.

The wave’ being referred to in the song represents the obstacles that attempt to hold you back; negative thoughts, procrastination, those negative comments and advises that keep playing in your head when you want to start that business, take big steps, make life-changing decisions. We all know that fear and doubt flourish best at these moments in our lives.

Goliath’ refers to people who talk ill of your faith, laugh at our ideas, hurt you with their words. They could be your friends, colleagues or superiors. This song is reminding you that God says differently, He works so everything can align in your favour and it is up to you to choose which voice you want to run with. There’s the voice of God that speaks your desires into existence, gives you the strength you need and there’s the several other voices that leave you lost, confused and an easy prey for the devil.

So, what stories have you been told? What negative remarks have you gotten? Who has discouraged you? Let this song be your reminder of what God is saying to you. You go ahead and listen to the song here. Perhaps, you have it already on your playlist but you haven’t listened to it in a long time and you have forgotten about the truths which the song lays out;go ahead, soak it all in again and let the voice of truth continue to be your guide.
